Greektown Casino-Hotel Gets A New Name And Facelift

Greektown Casino-Hotel, one of Detroit’s three retail sportsbooks and casinos, is getting a name change and losing its hyphen. The new name of the property will be Hollywood Casino at Greektown, Penn National Gaming announced in a Monday morning press release.

“Becoming Hollywood Casino at Greektown will offer our guests the best of both worlds: We’re keeping all of the unique, neighborhood charm that has defined Greektown since we opened our doors, while adding several new amenities that come with being a part of Penn National’s flagship brand family,” John Drake, the general manager of Hollywood Casino at Greektown, said in the release. “Whether you’re a regular, loyal guest or a first-time visitor, we’ll have something new and improved for you to experience and enjoy.”

Some of the new features will include new food and drink options, a $30 million renovation of the hotel lobby, and upgrades to all 400 guest rooms.

Events to mark the new name

The name change is expected to go into effect May 1, and will be celebrated through VIP and community-wide events on May 19 and May 21. More information on those events will be found at the casino’s promotions page.

Additionally, the casino will be rolling out mywallet, which will allow casino players the ability to connect to slot and table games from their phones, eliminating the need for cash. The casino has also renovated and upgraded its self-park and VIP parking lots.

The news of the change couldn’t come at a better time, as the casino has taken in $66.5 million in adjusted revenue so far in 2022, a distant third behind MotorCity (at $98.1 million) and MGM Grand ($150.8 million). And while Greektown has always been the third-place casino in town, the spread between top and bottom has grown in recent years.

No word on whether Dave Portnoy, the face of Penn National Gaming, will be making an appearance to celebrate the name change.
